The Ryder Cup
at The Wergs Golf Club
Saturday 8th October 2005
Weather: Rain from start to finish
The 2nd Ryder Cup was played at The Wergs Golf Club on 8th October. In true fashion, the rain began as the players assembled on the first tee and stopped as they left the last! Newbridge were defending the inaugural title won last year at Worfield by the narrowest of margins. This time round OW were out of the blocks quickly and were soon up in the first two matches with Wilf Guest, despite putting his team polo shirt under extreme pressure, playing well. Match three however was a struggle as the Newbridge pair played par golf, which even with his 745 years experience was too much for Space Davies. Cook and Bowyer, the Claverley men in Match Four were enjoying themselves in the rain, winning the first four holes to take a lead that became comprehensive by the 9th where they went 6 up. In Match Five first team player Jason Scott was playing great golf but he and Otis were up against Newbridge's ace in Henry Deans while in the final game it was nip and tuck. With four matches in it was 3 -1 to OW so only a half point was required from the last two games. Despite an excellent effort Jason and Otis lost by 2 holes so it was down to tour organiser extraordinaire Steve Stanier and our resident banker Mike Middleton to win by three holes and bring the Cup to Castlecroft for the first time.
